In a Bid for New Viewers, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 Begins With a Fellowship-Style Prologue

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will begin its third season with a Fellowship of the Ring-style prologue, designed to explain the series' status quo to new or lapsed viewers.

The Rings of Power Season 3 feels like something of a reset for Amazon's mega-expensive but divisive Middle-earth show. A five-year time jump is moving the series' narrative forward, key characters such as Gandalf and Sauron are now fully revealed and clearly the focus, while the less-popular Harfoots have been sidelined.

A prologue-style catch-up makes sense, then, to ease audiences into the series, which is now approaching its mid-point of five planned seasons. And even for loyal returning viewers, it has still been two years since Rings of Power's last episode. With so much to explain about the state of Middle-earth after two seasons of build-up, a voiceover akin to Galadriel's at the start of Fellowship makes sense to set the stage for what's to come.

Speaking to Empire magazine, showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay said the time-jump into the middle of Sauron's war on Middle-earth and accompanying prologue catch-up were deliberate tactics to get as many viewers as possible on board.

"It was a calculated decision to start with real momentum, and hopefully bring a few more people onto the train," McKay said.

"The first two seasons were all about building out this world," he continued, painting the show's freshman and junior years as their own prologue to what happens next. "Throughout that time, we're lighting all these fuses and setting all these stories in motion. The third season is when all those bombs are starting to explode."

For more casual Lord of the Rings viewers, Season 3 will include numerous familiar elements from Peter Jackson's film trilogy, such as the One Ring (which is finally created by Sauron), the Ringwraiths (or an early version of them), plus more from the Balrog (which now talks for some reason). Its focus seems to squarely be on Sauron's antics as his armies swarm Middle-earth, and the attempts by the Elves to repel him.

Meanwhile, Gandalf is busy with the Dark Wizard from the East, whose identity will also be revealed this season (fans believe he is likely one of the two Blue Wizards left out of Tolkien's main work). The dull political plotline of Númenor will also return, though is not being talked up as a main focus.

The first four episodes of Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premiere on November 11, 2026. Episodes five and six will be available to stream on November 18, and the final two episodes of the season will be released on November 25.

Amazon says The Rings of Power is one of the highest performing and most-viewed titles ever on Prime Video. Season 1 is the biggest TV series premiere in the history of Prime Video, and Season 2 is among the Top 5 most-watched returning seasons ever. The series has attracted over 185 million viewers worldwide so far.
