Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Kathryn Newton has said there's still hope for a fourth film in the franchise, if fans truly want it to happen.
Speaking to The Direct, Newton suggested that the power of Marvel's fandom could still get another sequel greenlit, despite a feeling among many viewers that Quantumania was a disappointment, and that the Ant-Man franchise had run its course.
Quantumania launched back in 2023, and failed to perform critically or commercially. Memorably, the movie ditched the series' previously enjoyable low-key capers for a CGI-heavy blockbuster story meant to serve as setup for Kang, the MCU's next Big Bad. (A situation unfortunately not helped further by Jonathan Majors' subsequent firing.)
Perhaps more crucially for Marvel and Disney, Quantumania was one of its most expensive films ever — and an enormous bet that did not pay off. With a budget of more than $330 million, the film struggled at the box office, and became one of the few MCU releases to not make its budget back.
Despite this, Newton — who plays Ant-Man's daughter Cassie Lang — has refused to rule out a fourth entry in the series happening eventually, even if it takes decades to arrive.
"I think that's not up to me, and it's up to the fans at the end of the day," Newton said. "I've always talked about the power of a fandom, and if you want something, it will happen, no matter what... If you love it, it's gonna come back around.
"We see it all the time with things being rebooted and sequels after 20 years," she continued. "If fans want something, we listen. And that's how I felt about everything I've done."
Perhaps in 20 years there will be another Ant-Man film? I suppose that is not impossible to rule out. Until then, both Newton and Ant-Man himself, Paul Rudd, will be back in Avengers: Doomsday. The latter looks to have been called up again as part of the main Avengers team, while Cassie has been spotted in a recent trailer bidding him farewell.
Here's hoping Ant-Man makes it through Doomsday and Secret Wars in one piece to make a fourth film someday. Exactly what such a movie might focus on, however, is unclear. The situation is not helped by the fact that Hank Pym actor Michael Douglas has largely retired from acting, while Hope van Dyne actress Evangeline Lilly has said she's taking an "indefinite hiatus" from acting to focus on her family.
Cassie, meanwhile, is expected to eventually join the Young Avengers team being created by Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop — if Marvel ever gets around to returning to those characters.
